Suyangdonguhoe, the domestic branch of a Young Korean Academy(흥사단) built by An, Chang-ho in San Francisco on May 13, 1913, was launched as a training institute with the purpose of improving the national identity and character.
Suyangdonguhoe, in a bid to pave the way for building Chosun New Culture in legitimate space, focused on having members of Suyangdonguhoe observe obligations in the covenant and holding cultural lectures through a monthly meeting.
Based on a logic that the individual and society are an organism, an individual-centered -competitiveness-buildup movement unfolded. This recognition was developed into a logic that the main force of modem capitalist society Suyangdonguhoe headed for would be Chosun's elite such as intellectuals and capitalists with sound character, what Suyangdonguhoe called the ' pivotal class'.
In January 1927, when Shinganhoe formation was impending, Suyangdonguhoe organized the "society for the study of organization(회 진흥방침 연구위원회)" and appointed Cho, Pyong-ok, O1u, Yo-han, and Lee, Kwang-su on its committee. In the process of revising the covenant, 010, Pyong-ok suggested that Suyangdonguhoe should evolve into a political organization that covers all parties of nationalists. Given the fact that he was involved in sponsoring Shinganhoe and serving as Executive Secretary in Shinganhoe, Cho, Pyong-ok's suggestion was interpreted as his intention that Cho, Pyong-ok would be a core force of Shinganhoe that advocated national unification Chu, Yo-han also sided himself with Cho, Pyong-ok's idea. However, his assertion evoked opposition from Suyangdonguhoe because his idea was against the principle of Suyangdonguhoe, which never allowed organizational political action.
Suyangdonguhoe was re-named as Donguhoe emitting 'Suyang' at the end of 1929, while it expressed its interests in Chosun's social realities by revising its rules. This step taken was considered as a reaction to rapidly turning Shinganhoe to the Right ever since a people's rally caused by the Kwangju student movement in November, 1929. However, Donguhoe didn't show its will in social revolution or political independence, only returning back to a culturally training institute.
The forces of Suyangdonguhoe, especially the members of Pyongyang leaded by Chu, Yo-han, were organizationally involved in the Shinganhoe movement. Through their activities, the position and line of Suyangdonguhoe that joined Shinganhoe were found out. Shinganhoe's Pyongyang branch, organized in December 1927, won over several members of Suyangdonguhoe including Kim, Byong-yeon, serving as Executive. Unique is that core forces of Suyangdonguhoe in Pyongyang, including Kim, Dong-won, the top-leader in this area, did not join in Shinganhoe. It explains that their social positions as capitalists exercised influence upon the direction of the Shinganhoe movement in Pyongyang afterwards.
The involvement in Shinganhoe by a faction of Suyangdonguhoe expanded Shinganhoe as national unification front, and in fact downgraded the quality of the campaign for fighting against imperialism due to fundamental limits resulting from both lines.
When the headquarters of Shinganhoe veered to the Right at the end of 1929 through early of 1930, in sequence, a break-up of Shinganhoe occurred out among socialists.
