The districts in Gaegyeong, the capital of Koryeo consisted of Five 'Bu(部)' and Thirty-five 'Bang(坊)'. 'Bu' and 'Bang' were divided and named on the basis of four seasons and Yinyang-Wuxing(陰陽五行) according to directions. In addition to them, several 'Bang' were related with the geographical features, the facilities, and the temples.
In 'Dong-Bu'(the eastern part), Yeongchang-bang connected with Yeongtong Temple (contained the meaning of greeting spring.) Bonghyang-bang and Anjeong-bang contain the meaning of performing ancestral rites in the royal ancestors' shrine. Songnyeong-bang connected with the royal ancestors' shrine contain the meaning of the longevity of the Royal Family. Anjeong-bangㆍHongin-bangㆍSongnyeong-bangㆍChangnyeong-bangㆍYangje-bang corresponded to ripe spring as 'Mu(木)'. In 'Nam-Bu'(the southern part), Deoksan-bang bade farewell to the late spring, Deokpung-bang greeted early summer, Deoksu-bang and Anheung-bang met midsummer, or 'Huo(火)' and Anshin-bang touched late summer.
In 'Seo-Bu'(the western part), 'Tu(土)' was set up for the circulation of Wuxing(五行) in Jinan-bang and Hyangcheon-bang and corresponded to late summer and early fall. Then 'Jin(金)', next to 'Tu', greeted mid-fall in Ojeong-bang and Samsong-bang, late fall in Geonbokbang. After that, 'Shui(水)' of 'Buk-Bu'(the northern part) met early winter in Sajaam-bang, midwinter in Sana-bang and Naecheonwang-bang, and late winter in Jawun-bangㆍWangnyun-bang, and Ogwan-bang. Jeongwon-bangㆍHeungguk-bangㆍBeobwang-bang belonged to 'Buk-Bu', but they were located in the east of Hwangseong and played a role of conveying the vigor of spring to Hwangseong(the Imperial Castle). The Eight 'Bang' of 'Jung-bu'(the middle part) themselves had a system of circulation and controlled the other 'Bu' as 'tu(土)'.
Goryeo people believed in the Yin and Yang theory as a seasonal principle and used it to plan the city of Gaegyeong. It is not proper that we regard their belief as a kind of old superstition from a modern and scientific viewpoint, indeed we can review our present situation through the living attitude of the Goryeo people who adapted themselves to the principle of nature.
