This paper intends to find out the reasons and background of the establishment of Aprok(鴨綠) riverside defense system and the movement of the capital of Koguryo(高句麗) to Kuknae Castle(國內城).
The capital area of Koguryo contained the outer areas of the castle as well Kuknae Castle itself and riverside of Aprok River. Jipahn(集安) area, in which Kuknae Castle was located, was a basin, the shape of which was prolonged by 10 kilometers east to west and 5 kilometers south to north. Its soil was fertile and its climate was comfortable. In this area, many iron farming tools, related to Koguryo, were discovered. It meant that agriculture was growing in this area. Fishing industry and the transportation through the waterways of Aprok River were well developed in this area.
This area was, moreover, a strategic point easy to defend against invasions of enemy and perform the operation of attack efficiently through the water routes around. This area was, however, unfavorable for defending against a well-equipped enemy army when the radius of military operations was extended.
Koguryo, as it grew, got established military defending systems including the land and maritime defending system, Aprok River estuary and islands defending system and Han River(漢江) estuary defending system. Especially Aprok River defending system in the capital area was very important.
Kuknae Castle was an inland port as well as a capital of the kingdom, which had functions of an entrance from the open sea to inland and an exit toward the open sea through Seohan Bay(西韓灣). There were some outports in the areas of Aprok River estuary, which were linked with the inner harbour of Kuknae Castle. Among them, Seoanpyong(西安平) appeared to be the most important outport.
For Koguryo, therefore, to control over Seohan Bay meant that it could have the command of the north part of Yellow Sea(黃海) and exercise its influence over inland areas through the net of small watercourses, so as to integrate inland areas politically and form an economic sphere by promoting and improving the transportation and distribution structure of those areas.
The estuary of Aprok River was a terminal of Nocheolsan Sea Route(老鐵山航路) easy to move from China to Koguryo. The distance of the sea route was short enough to sail, so as to attack the capital in both directions of sea and land.
Koguryo, from the beginning, seemed like to recognize the military strategic importance of Aprok River and Seohan Bay. Koguryo occupied Seoanpyong in the year 12(A.D. 311) in the reign of king Michun(美川王), and advanced toward west coast. After this, Aprok River had great weight with the national policy and strategic defense system in Koguryo. There were fierce offensive and defensive battles to secure this area in the wars between Koguryo and Su (隋) and T ng(唐).
The military establishments on the riverside of Aprok River had a dual purpose of defense and advance. The castles seemed to be built for that dual purpose. The middle reaches of the river, on the both sides of which military defending establishments were built, were made use of as a part of the defending system. These military establishments seemed to have relation with me defense system of the capital area and Aprok River directly and indirectly. Several castles such as Seoanpyong Castle(西安平城), Kuryun Castle(九連城), Bakjak Castle(泊灼城), Daehaeng Castle(大行城) and Baekmasan Castle(白馬山城), were built in the areas around Dandong(단동) down me River. In addition, the riverside defense system of Koguryo seemed to be established in the areas around the estuary of Aprok River.
