This study has metallurgically examined some of the iron artifacts excavated from the 2 Koguryo military outposts located in the Han River valley near Seoul, the 4th outpost at Mount Acha and the outpost at Gooeuidong, and the Dongmoon Koguryo fortress located at Moosoon in Manchuria. The development and peculiar distribution pattern of such diverse microstructures as cementite, ferrite, pearlite and martensite were found to provide important information about ancient iron-smelting, steel-making and heat-treatment. It has been observed that bloomery iron and cast iron were both smelted in Koguryo as raw materials. Especially cast iron played an important role by being used in various steel making processes as well as in simple casting. The steel making in Koguryo was achieved either by carburization of low C iron or by decarburization of cast iron. In some cases steel was produced in the process termed cofusion where both low C iron and cast iron were combined to get the right C content. The use of steel was found restricted in critical parts having a special strength requirement such as the cutting edge of an ax and the pointed tip of a spear, indicating that steel was expensive at the time. These critical parts were often given an additional hardening treatment by quenching.
The foregoing results show that almost every aspect of ancient iron technology could be observed in Koguryo. This kind of technical diversity must be in close association with the unique cultural, political and geographical situations Koguryo was in. The present study has tested the possibility of the use of iron artifacts and the technical aspects involved in their manufacture as a means to demonstrate the identity of Koguryo, and the result is encouraging.
