The article seeks to analyze the formation and appropriation of modernization theory as a theoretical framework of eurocentrism. Modernization theory bases on the western intellectual tradition in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless modernization theory in general means a great project of the American social science in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century that emerged as a reaction of the American intellectuals to the new world order under the American hegemony. The modernization theory was a American vision of the world hegemony in the period of the Cold War that aimed to justify the political and economic intervention of the USA in the Third World. The American model of modernization with the strong economic development and effective democracy became a general model for the modernization in the Third World. But this theory lost its attraction, as modernization projects in the Third World failed.
During this time the German intellectuals appropriated the American modernization theory to respond to the German question in German history. That was the "Der Deutsche Sonderweg" thesis which played a dominant role in German historiography for a long time.
