Seo Jung-joo found the light of relief from the Shilla spirit during Korean War when people suffered the loss of one's linguistic ability, mental derangement or committed suicide. Since 1950's, the reflection on the war caused by violence in modern civilization had appeared in Korean society. In this situation, Seo Jung-joo spoke for the position of antimodernity.
Shilla spirit means not only affirmative and positive attitude to the secular affairs but also respect for man's life and dignity. In addition, it aims at ideologically the eternity which is represented as heaven. In this Shilla spirit can be observed the aspiration for return to the eternal world which is composed of peculiar folk beliefs, shamanism, three religions, confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.
This paper intends to scrutinize Shilla Study in which Seo Jung-joo researched with mythic interpretation and literary imagination. Simultaneously, this paper alms at making clear how Seo Jung-joo's poetry make connection between three religions, confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and the folk beliefs, shamanism. Futhermore, with a study of the different edition of Shilla Study, originality will be added to this paper.
