The purpose of this study is to understand participation motive and benefit sought of potential visitors in rural tourism, and to investigate the types of experience activities that visitors prefer. The benefits sought and preferences of on-site activities are examined by segmenting the market based on participation motives, so that the study attempts to acquire useful data that are appropriate and distinctive to growing rural tourism market, and that can be applied to practical marketing strategies. A summary of this study’s result is as follows: first, motives ‘for experience learning of children’ and ‘to escape from complex urban area’ are shown as the highest result among participation motive items. According to this results, it was identified that these are the most general and essential benefits sought which should be considered significantly in the rural tourism. Also as a result of cluster analysis, the samples were segmented by three groups, ‘children-centered participation type(41.76%), ‘active participation type(36.81%), ‘passive participation type(21.43%)’. Second, as a result of analysis on benefits sought item in rural tourism, it was found that benefits sought related to management was considered important such as ‘farm facility should be clean’, ‘planned experience activities should be performed properly’ and ‘the quality of provided food should be good’. Third, as preferred on-site activities, it was shown that respondents preferred active experiences such as ‘rest experience for health’, ‘nature experience’ and ‘traditional food experience’.
