This research was conducted with the purpose of finding the effects of caffeine ingestion(3㎎/㎏) on female college students regarding their body fluids, heart rate and RPE in a high temperature environment(30~32℃, humidity 40~60%) prior to working out. So 15 female subjects who did not have any side effects from caffeine were selected and placed randomly into 3 groups - 5 subjects each for Control, Placebo, and Caffeine group. All ingestion was carried out an hour prior to working out, then running was conducted on the treadmill for 40 minutes at 70% of each subjects VO2max after a 15 minute high temperature adaption phase. The weight, urine osmolality, urine specific gravity difference from pre/post workout was measured while the heart rate and RPE was measured every 5 minutes during the workout. The results showed that there was not a noticeable difference in the weight(p=.972), urine osmolality(p= .661) and urine specific gravity(p= .948) of the 3 groups(p=.972). There was also no significant difference in the increase of heart rate(p=.243) or RPE(p=.630) in the 3 groups either. So ingestion of 3㎎/㎏ of caffeine prior to working out in a high temperature environment does not have much effect on the loss of body fluids and shows that caffeine can be safely used as a sports performance supplement.
