This article deals with Bultmann's theology which has influenced the circle of theology through 20th century. The subject of this article is to re-evaluate the demythologizing programme which has been the most controversial issue amongst Bultmann's theological subjects. I limit my study of this article thoroughly on the demythologizing programme to avoid that the article becomes superficial, since the demythologizing programme is closely related with other subjects of Bultmann's theology.
Section 1 of the main body of this article, "The Purpose of the demythologizing programme" is trying to find out the objects of the demythologizing programme exactly as Bultmann has intended in his demythologizing programme. The demythologizing programme has been misunderstood not only by critics on Bultmann;s theology but by his interpreters. I want to overcome various misunderstandings on demythologizing programme by clarifying the objects of the demythologizing programme. Besides, I examine whether the demythologizing programme is legitimate or not.
Section 2, "Hermeneutics and Historical Documents" deals with hermeneutical principles suggested by Bultmann. We find out how Bultmann approaches to historical documents, and understand Bultmann's view of history in this chapter.
Section 3, "Hermeneutical principles and Existential Philosophy" shows how Bultmann applies the hermeneutical principles to the Bible. I point out how much Bultmann's theology has been influenced by existential philosophy, and what are the different points between the two.
Section 4, "The demythologizing programme and the Concept of Salvation" deals with the meanings of the cross and resurrection of Jesus. Here we understand what the result of the demythologizing programme signifies in soteriology.
Lastly, chapter Ⅲ as a conclusion evaluates the theology of Bultmann which has been dealt with in the main body of this article. In six items, I point out weak points and strong points of Bultmann's theology and suggest some aspects which should be considered for further study of Bultmann.
