This study aims to explore Augustine's understanding of the Lord's Prayer in one of his earliest writings De sermone Domini in monte. This work is not a commentary in full-fleged fashion but a homily delivered to his audience as he was first ordained as priest in 391. This study is important because in this work, more specifically in his delineation of the Lord's Prayer, we can grasp his creativity as well as his knowledge of his predecessors' commentaries on the Lord's Prayer such as Cyprian's De sermone Domini.
Just like his theology at the time when Augustine wrote De sermone Domini in monte, his exegesis was under the sway of Plationism, which he came to overcome in the late 390s. For him, therefore, the Sermon on the Mount does not enumerate the ethical principle by which disciples have to live but lays out steps through which ascetics can achieve mystical union with God. Though he never freed himself of the influence of Platonism from the middle of 390s he was able to comprehend the Pauline anthropology of which he took advantage against Pelagianism.
One of Augustine's hermeneutical principles in interpreting De sermone Domini in monte was the numer seven. For him, the Sermon on the Mount characterizes seven Beatitudes. Furthermore, the Lord's Prayer comprises seven petitions. the number seven corresponds to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is one of the features revealed in his homily on the Lord's Prayer.
Augustine delivered De sermone Domini in monte not as theologian but as minister. In short, despite his penchant for Neoplatonism his main concern was to take care of his flocks just as his successive theological controversies were also launched to protect his people.
