『Samguksagi』 is the best literature on the ancient history. But it was fell down from its position as a historic canon between the collapse of Chosun and the Japanese colonization when historic nationalists, resisting to the colonial view of history, severely criticized the literature for sticking to the Confucianism and flunkeyism.
This circumstance most privileged Yeongaesomun. In 『Samguksagi』, author Kim Bu Sik described Yeongaesomun as a treator who killed his king to usurp the throne. This view lasted till the end of Chosun.
As the modern times arrived, Yeogaesomun was emerged by a great hero of national salvation by nationalist historians, Baekam Park Eun Sik and Danjae Sin Chae Ho. These two welcomed Yeongaesomun as such hero because he kept Kokuryo from the enormous army of King Taejong of T'ang. They saw Yeongaesomun representing the very savor who would save the Korean nation from devastation by outside powers in the 20th century.
Ascending Yeongaesomun to a hero required explanations about his monarch killing and Taoist promotion policy. The killing was interpreted by Baekam as a legitimate self-defence and highly perceived by Danjae as a revolution for Kokuryo. Baekam saw the above policy as an effort for reviving Kokuryo's own native religion. Daejae claimed the policy hadn't been existed.
Though different in describing facts and how to explain them, Baekam and Danjae were common in praising Yeongaesomun for national salvation and advocating his alleged high treason. Yeongaesomun was recreated by the historians from a treator to a great hero who overcame national crisis, and is being viewed as a figure of high charisma today.
