This thesis examines the meaning of 'contact' presented in the 3rd Seoul International Media Art Biennale hosted by Seoul Museum of Art. About 60 artists from 20 countries were invited to be part of this international media art exhibition, they presented mainly digital art works based on computer games. The exhibition comprised of four categories, "War, Commerce, Contact/Body and Play" under the sub-theme "Game/Play".
As Artistic Director I organized this exhibition with the idea of 'contact' influenced by a performance of Ulay and Abramovic's 〈Imponderabilia〉(1977), which expressed the various responses from an audience through the use of physical contact. From this performance, we can review the social meaning that physical contact can imply. Desmond Morris proposed that a variety of physical contacts are the important elements to ensure social unity and harmony.
Since Happenings in 1960s, audience participation has changed many aspects of contemporary art. As a result art like painting or sculpture has been substitued by process art like performance events or installations. Yve Klein's nude performance 〈Anthropometries〉 has shown this aspect very well, it was an exellent case for the use of physical contact.
In digital art, interactivity becomes a characteristic of audience participation. The audience plays the keyboard of a computer watching the results on a monitor during the computer game. This enables the process of contact with others to eventuate.
