The word ‘omohigumanashi’ which was used in the literary works of Heian-period is now widely translated into ‘omoiiyari ga nai’ or ‘fukai kangae ga nai’. In this report, under the doubt for the present-day’s annotations, meanings and uses of the word ‘omohigumanashi’ together with the word ‘kuma’ among the literary works in Jodai-priod and Heian-period were widely investigated. The results of the study suggested that the word does not express lack of imagination in a subject for an object (e.g.‘omoiyari ga nai’) but express lack of self-control for sentiment in a subject. Furthermore, it was considered that the word ‘kuma’ should not be translated into ‘fukai kanngae ga nai’, because the word ‘kuma’ does not mean ‘oku-bukai tokoro’ but ‘hitome ni tukanai tokoro’. Therefore, ‘omohigumanashi’ would mean a situation that a subject has a sentiment without hidden part to others and furthermore, a subject express the saying and doing which should be hidden to others. From the considerations above, the meaning of the word ‘omohigumanashi’ in modern language should translate into ‘tsutsushimi ga nai’ or ‘rokotsuda’.
