Most of the Korean traditional architectures are made of wood. The post-beam joint is wood-to-wood connection and the joint performance is very important to structural analysis. Until recently, however, the structural performance of traditional post-beam joint has not been adequately analyzed. This study was aimed to evaluate the influence of shape of a beam on moment-carrying capacity of traditional post-beam joint. Japanese larch(Larix kaempferi) 6-ply glulam was manufactured by pre-cut machine for the specimens. Moment resistance, joint stiffness, and failure mode were investigated under static bending forces. Results of the tests indicated that a post-beam joint becomes stiffer as shoulder of a beam is increased. The results also indicated that all types of the joints undergo very large deformation while maintaining same moment resistance after yield point. The failure modes are different as the shape of a beam, which are either splitting of post or shear and bending failure at the mortise branches.
The moment resistance and the failure mode indicated that the shape of a beam substantially affects the performance of the joint. It was concluded that the shoulder of a beam reinforce the joint. Hence, the shoulder of a beam must be considered as important factor in structural design of traditional joints.
