This thesis is to understand the meaning of Kim Hyun's strategy of remaining reader instead of critic with the concept of reading and reflection.
Western dualism was the center of Kim Hyun's literary thought in 60s. The establishment of the type of idea suitable for korean situation, however, became the main concern. It was considered as a solution to the chronic problem in Korean society such as nihilism, the absence of individual, and differentiation of thought. Kim Hyun had a dual attitude toward idea. He thought idea was the necessary factor in Korea because idea would helped to overcome nihilism and defeatism. But He also thought that idea could be a suppressive factor someday.
Kim Hyun studied imagination and desire from mid-70s because the introduction of idea which is not proper in our society could be the cause of newness-comflex. A study on imagination and desire was the response to the suppressive society in 80s. Literary experience is the synthesis of pleasure and torture in Kim Hyun's criticism. According to Kim Hyun, Literature is useless, so it gives us a chance to think of suppression. Uselessness is not the primary factor in Kim Hyun's thought. The most important thing is that reader should treat literary works as useless thing in order for the works to give a chance to think of suppression. This attitude means that reader should keep distance from pleasure and follow the inner voice that you must not follow the joy. The phantom of tortured I is the necessary factor here and this is related to super ego's voice in Kant's philosophy. Pleasure in pain is also key factor in reading.
Aesthetic state is both a sign of negation of modern society and a foundation of literary autonomy. Literary image can be a cause of aesthetic state of unlimited possibility and can function as indirect resistance again society. Literary autonomy is the evidence of human freedom.
According to Kim Hyun, subject is defined as distance. Desire and society is the object of reflection in Kim Hyun's thought. Reflection can make reflective subject distant from himself. But reflective subject can't say that he is free from desire because the difference between the enunciated and the enunciating subject. Kim Hyun, however, would not give up the belief that constant symbolization can relieve the negativity of trauma from the suppression of desire. Finally, he encountered the unacceptable conclusion that desire is the cause of violence. He finds himself surrounded by the closde circle of desire.
Society without repression is the final destiny of Kim Hyun's thought. It is the object of thought, not of recognition. It exists beyond our intuition and recognition. Kim Hyun meets the antinomy of undecidedness owing to the fauilure of symbolization. Language can't say everything. Society without repression is criteria of human thought and can function as criticism of the negativity of existing society. Kim Hyun hesitate between the undetermined state and the order caused by the exclusion of the lost thing.
Reflective subject can find his identity only through the act of reflection. If he stop the reflection, he will meet the danger of losing his identity. Reading and writing is a method of making sure that he is free and is distant from the desire. The attitude of remaning of reader is a way to exist bewteen the the demand of symbolization and the negation of repressive conceptualization.
