In the 1930's the novels of Korea faced the newly motivated turning point due to the internal criticism of the trend of literature - in which literature had been regarded as the political oppression and the means of extrication. A lot of writers began to pay attention not only to the nature of technical refinement (the inherent aspect of novels), but also to the methods of displaying the ability of the techniques. The tendency of writers was concretely reflected on their many-sided experiments with literary material and shaping processes. As the writers complied with the request of the fashion of the day Korean Modem Novels could be equipped with the foundation of aesthetics. Especially the modernistic writers, declaring the difference between the literature of the former and the present age, demonstrated their spirit of experimentalism and the manifold techniques of creative writing. The mentalistic attitude and the multilateral trials undertook a determinate task of modernizing Korean Novels. For example, 'a psychological novel', which belonged to one of the various implementations unrolled by writers at that time and formed a part of groping for the methodology of formulating fiction, played an significant role of molding the aesthetics of Korean Modem Novels.
In this essay I will try to find a clue of the aesthetic aspect of Korean Modern Novels which started to appear around 30's. All the material mobilized for this thesis consists of the literary works of Mr. Myung-ik Choi who described the psychological and mental status of the contemporary intellectuals based on the manifold techniques of creative writing. The techniques of 'a psychological novel' could be itemized into three types: a stream of consciousness and association of images, a reversal of time, a technique of internal monologue. In his novels these technical skills assorted into three factors realistically reflect 'a stream of consciousness' which has been considered chaotic and unstable.
With the techniques of description Mr. Myung-ik Choi attempts to embody 'a stream of consciousness' of characters in detail as much as possible. In this process of shaping the abstract facet into the concrete one he not only wholly expresses the melancholy mentality and dissociation of consciousness of intellectuals but also literally reproduces 'a stream of consciousness' itself beyond the level of a simple inner description. Conclusively, the psychologism techniques of creative writing, which Mr. Choi has tried to implement through his literary works, could be regarded as a reaction of the sincere quest about aesthetic inquiry - 'how' we express ultimately.
