Has Korean urban administration as an applied social science properly responded to the social demands so far? In oder to provide in part some answers to the question, this study analyzes the current status of urban administration education and researches. Main findings are follows: Firstly, twenty three undergraduate programs of 19 universities as of 2008 are offering urban administration majors within the social science orientation. Those institutions offer 790 courses in total for urban administration education. Among them planning is the most common course offered by those institutions, while politics, intergovernmental relations, NGO are the least offered. Average number of faculties of an urban administration department(major) is only 4.9 persons. Secondly, an analysis of all articles published in the Journal of the Korean Urban Administration Management Association(JKRUMA) between 1988 and 2008 reveals that studies dealing with practical urban issues have been dominant while studies on urban government have been relatively few. Particularly, among those studies on an urban government field, such issues as local autonomy, e-government have been researched continuously after the introduction of local autonomy in Korea, other issues such as personnel and leadership have been almost absent. And among those studies dealt with practical urban issues, the field of industry/economy/finance has been researched most, while issues such as NGO, IGR, and conflict resolution have been studied very few. Finally, almost 50 % of researches published in JKRUMA have not utilized any quantitative data, and those studies using quantitative data have not employed various advanced analytic statistical techniques by just presenting descriptive statics such as frequencies and means. The study concludes with some discussions on future Korean urban administration education and research practices.
