Report Errors
Generally, Jeong Ji-yong's poetry is evaluated highly owing mainly to its accurate words, sharp and sensitive expression, and polished style. Because of such characteristics, it is undeniable fact that he was epoch-making poet in the history of modern Korean poetry.
However, The aesthetic characteristics based on the poetic forms are hardly possible to stop completely criticisms or negative opinions of others on his work. Such proposition that the ideal of poetry is not that of poetic word shall be also applied to Jeong Ji-yong. The purpose of this paper is to identify the aesthetic characteristics and their limits of his poetry with several poems of his masterpieces by referring existing criticism about his poetry, and to evaluate the value of them.
〈Nostalgia〉 is a excellent work as regards rhetorical devices and expression of sentiments, but it has a limit for eliminating the structure of reality. The dynamic of this poem is based on emotional and aesthetic impulse, but it is not related with historical or social intention. An intellectual's sorrow from 〈Cafe France〉 is very fragmentary and impromptu. From this poem, thinking is classified with feeling, thus one goes in the opposite direction of the other.
The primary aesthetic characteristic of Jeong Ji-yong's poetry is remarkably expressed from 〈Sea 9〉, and it excludes all of polished sensitivity, sensuous emotion, and racial consciousness. Writing method applied to this poem is too narrow. Such a fact is hard to pass over, since his poetry have an overall effect on the history of modem poetry.
