This research started on this background that how the alcoholics would accept the stressors and cope with the stressors when they were exposed to stressors. The social supports might interact with the stressor and they might bring the moderating effects on the coping with stressors by alcoholics.
The researching result would say that as the alcoholics might be exposed to stressors more frequently, they would try to cope with stressors. Because they were deeply involved in the drinking and they could not distinguish the stressors and distressors, so they had such habits to avoid or deny the stressors. And here social supports had a moderating functions that might reduce the level of stressors after social support interacted with the stressors. However if social supports were divide to 4 factors, they could not show such results to influence on dependent variable. Instead, when they were integrated in a variable, they would show the powerful affecting results.
If the stressor would interact with social support, the new interacting item might bring the most important moderating effects on dependent variable. Here, instead of 4 divided factors, only the integrated social support would affect the more powerful influences to this researching alcoholics.

본 연구는 병의원에 입원 중인 알코올 중독자들을 대상으로 그들이 스트레스 원에 노출되었을 때 그것을 어떻게 받아들이고, 어떻게 대처하는가를 파악하고자 하는데서 출발하였다. 여기서 또한 사회적 지지의 여부가 스트레스 원과 상호작용을 일으켜 스트레스 원에 대처하는데 긍정적인 조절효과를 가져오는가를 조사하고자 하는 것이었다.
이와 같은 가정 하에서 분석한 결과 스트레스 원에 자주 노출될수록 스트레스 원에 대처하려는 태도가 나타나지만, 스트레스와 비 스트레스를 구분하기 힘들 정도로 음주에 빠져 있고, 스트레스 원을 부인하거나 회피하려는 기제로 인해 정상인이 스트레스 원에 대처하는 반응에 비해 설득력이 훨씬 낮게 나타났다. 또 사회적 지지라는 조절변인이 스트레스 원에 작용해서 독립변인의 정도를 훨씬 경감시키는 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다.
사회적 지지는 네 가지 요인으로 나누어지는데, 네 가지 요인이 각각 알코올 환자들이 스트레스 원에 대처하는데 미치는 영향보다는 한 가지로 통합했을 때 종속변인에 미치는 영향이 훨씬 크게 나타남을 알 수 있다. 분명한 것은 스트레스 원이나 사회적 지지라는 두 변인이 종속변인에 중요한 영향을 미치는 변수이며 상호작용을 해서 종속변인을 조절한다는 사실이다. 또 사회적 지지와 스트레스 원ㆍ사회적 지지 상호작용 항이 스트레스 원의 대처에 작용하는 조절효과는 상당히 크다는 것이 드러났고, 특히 통합된 사회적지지라는 조절변인과 스트레스 원의 상호작용 항이 네 가지 요인으로 나눈 조절변수와 결합하여 상호작용하는 것보다 훨씬 조절효과가 큰 것으로 드러났다.
