For many years, a considerable amount of studies on the Cold War were produced. Yet, most of the researches have been concentrated on the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, or political and military antagonism between the East and the West. It seems obvious that researches concerning the cultural aspects of the Cold War were relatively disregarded compared to the major issues, Respectively, during the Cold War era, the camps of the East and the West used all necessary means of the mass media in order to propagate the superiority and legitimacy of their ideology and system. This also included inciting negative feelings and antagonism towards each other. In this aspect, the Cold War was a psychological warfare as well as a culture war. By and large, therefore, these particular aspects need to be examined as well in order to broadly understand the Cold War.
As a part of the research, this paper tries to analyze the Cold War films of East Germany during the 1950s and 1960s. The films had a major influence on people along with the radio in 1950s; it certainly had its advantage of sending perplexed ideology of the Cold War in a very simple and easy way to the audience. The East German regime, without a doubt, took full advantage of the films incorporating anti-capitalism, anti-U.S. and anti-West Germany. Numerous films were produced to make the most of it as a successful propaganda method. As a result, a binary perspective thinking of the world as only allies and foes, and reckless patriotism were aggravated among the East German society. Thus, an analysis on the East Germany's Cold War films will provide an opportunity to observe a different facet of the War, as a cultural war.
This paper will introduce ten representative films of the Cold War, specially films produced in 1950s and 1960s. By analyzing how the films embodied the competition and the conflict between the two camps, particularly in the realm of culture and everyday life, this paper will critically discuss how the Cold War influenced and restrained the thinking and the action of the people. By all means, this paper will bridge the academic gap in our filed by providing reasonable amount of information on the Cold War society. And eventually, this work will help us to critically reexamine our awareness towards the Cold War and overcome the misconceptions among the society.
