This paper attempted to investigate the effect of internet on the export patterns of total manufacturing industries, as well as IT and non-IT sectors in Korea. An empirical analysis is made by specifying the five gravity models of trade for 56 countries and by applying the maximum likelihood estimation of balanced panel models.
The empirical results are summarized as follows: It is found that the internet connectivity has the significant impact on the total manufacturing exports of Korea if the growth of Korea's web host and the combined web host between Korea and trade partners are included. It is shown that the growth of trade partners' web host has no robust relationship with the total manufacturing exports. No evidence is given that the growth of web host has the important impact on the existing export patterns of Korea which is kept to the trading blocks. It is presented that the internet is not significant to affect the relationship between distant and total manufacturing exports, implying that information costs play no more important role than transportation costs in determining the export patterns. The similar results are found in the case where the IT and non-IT exports are included as the dependent variables of gravity equations. But it is clearly noted that the growth of web host has more important impact on the non high technology exports than the high technology exports such as IT exports.
