The Gospel of Thomas contains an important theological theme, the realized eschatology. It is appearing in the New Testament so strongly. But the New Testament has both the realized and future eschatology together. Matthew, Luke and Q are present in the Gospel of Thomas as forms of the sayings of Jesus, not of stories. The way to be able to gain the kingdom of God in Matthew and Luke in the present time is only through Jesus. But the Gospel of Thomas and Q only through enlightenment of his sayings! Those who are enlightened now and in the present can be saved and know their own destiny. They know who they are, where they came from and where they will go. It is knowledge called “Gnosis.” If one know(ginosko) now and here, he will be enlightened and saved without help of the others. The Gospel of Thomas only has this realized eschatology existing in Jesus’ sayings of Q. Matthew and Luke try to color the realized eschatology of the sayings of Q with christology. But Q and Thomas understand that one can get salvation only through proper interpretation of Jesus’ sayings: the prologue of the Gospel of Thomas. This was an important basis of severe conflict between the Gnostic churches and the Apostolic churches. The latter argued that salvation is only through Jesus, which means christology. But the former believed in present salvation through the gnostic interpretation of Jesus’ sayings. By interpreting Q with the gnostic ideas, Thomas pursues this realized sal vation as eschatology, which became the center of a hot battle between the Gnostic churches and the Apostolic church.
