Taguchi Ukichi's Nihon kaiks shoshi first published in 1877 was an instant bestseller. It was part of the so-called 'Bunmeishi', i.e, Enlightenment history, widely written and read during the late 1870s and the 1880s. Enlightenment history was accepted by Japanese intellectuals as the answer to their quest for a new and rational form of history writing. Taguchi's book was one of the first of that kind.
The characteristics of Nihon kaika shoshi can be summerized into two elements. Firstly, it strove for a rational and systematic history, criticizing the earlier imperial histories as irrational. Secondly, it paid high regard to the role of the general population, denouncing the repressive government.
The popularity of Enlightenment history in the Meiji teens had clear political connotations. Most of all, it had sympathy with the Popular Rights movement in its vision of the New Japan. Both agreed on the central role of the general population in the construction of the modem Japanese state. In particular, Taguchi's history shared with the Popular Rights movement the vision of placing the general population in the center of the new nation. With the decline of the Popular Rights movement, the emphasis of Enlightenment moved from the popular elements to methodological issues, as clear in the case of Miyake Yonekichi's books.
In short, Enlightenment history in Meiji Japan reflected the historical stage in which Japanese society searched for a new kind of state-building. In particular, Taguchi's history provided a historical model for the Popular Rights movement. However, as Japanese society moved away from the movement, Enlightenment history also shedded off political implications, indulging in methodological issues.
