Lloyd's has played a leading role in the development of world insurance market. Specifically the history of the field of insurance against loss including marine insurance can be regarded as the very history of Lloyd's. In its three hundred year history it had generally enjoyed smooth development until mid-1960s when it suffered the first crisis due to a huge catastrophe, which it succeeded in overcoming through drastic self-restructuring measures.
During the period between late 1980s and early 1990s, it also met the second crisis owing to an abnormal catastrophe. It was the most serious crisis since its establishment three hundred years ago. To deal with the crisis, the company consecutively announced and made effect the Planning for profit in 1993 and the Lloyd's Reconstruction and Renewal in 1995. Helped by those measures, it has generated profit since 1996 fiscal year.
However, the further development of Lloyd's can be said to depend upon how it adroitly deals with various big and small problems it meet now and in the future and its determination to continue to execute the above-mentioned Plans more thoroughly.
