The purpose of this study is to examine causal relationship between information technology (IT) investment and economic development, and to obtain policy implications of the results. To this end, the author attempts to provide more careful consideration of the causality issues by applying recently developed rigorous techniques of Granger causality to Korean data.
Tests for unit roots, co-integration, and Granger causality are presented. It is found that causality runs from IT investment to economic development with feedback. In other words, the existence of bi-directional causality between IT investment and economic development was detected. The study finding of bi-directional Granger causality or feedback between IT investment and economic development has a number of implications for policy analysts and forecasters in Korea.
Increasing economic development requires enormous IT investment, though there are many other factors contributing to economic development, and IT is but one part of it. Thus, this study generates confidence in decisions to invest in the IT infrastructure. Moreover, this study lends support to the argument that an increase in real income, ceteris paribus, gives rise to IT investment. Growth results in a higher proportion of national income spent on IT services and stimulates further IT investment.
