The market position of Taiwanese container hub port of Kaohsiung has confronted with strong challenges from other Asia-Pacific container hub ports. Behind only Hong Kong and Singapore, its world ranking of the 3rd largest container port in the world had fell down to the 6thin just four years. In 2003, the ports of Shanghai, Shenzen and Busan handled more containers than the port of Kaohsiung. It is the purpose of the present study to provide prospects for the future development of Taiwanese container hub port. It is argued that facing the internal issues of speedy relocation of industries to mainland China and transformation to hi-tech industries generating relatively low-volume but high-value containerized cargoes, the growth of Taiwanese containerized import and export containers through the ports will keep on slowing down in the future. While major measures taken by the government including the abolition of the Dock Labor Scheme together with the privatization of terminal operations and the constrained direct cross-strait shipping link under the OSC arrangement as well have accomplished much in improving the port performance, the present study concludes that Taiwanese container hub ports will still greatly suffer from the lack of direct cross-strait shipping link with mainland China. The longer the Taiwanese ports waiting for the lift of the ban on direct cross-strait shipping link, the more the port will suffer.
