Over the last two decades, the concept of sustainable development has emerged as a new development paradigm, combining social, economic, and environmental aspects of development. Creating a suitable urban structure is a crucial factor for sustainable socio-economic development, and many complex issues are involved in that theme. In this study, we dealt with the relation between urban spatial structure and transportation energy use. To evaluate the validity of compact city policy, this study built urban dynamic model and assessed the transportation energy use under different land use scenarios. The simulation shows that the most important factor in transportation energy use is traffic volume. And the more buildings densify, the less traffic volumes are, then transportation energy use is decreasing. In the other side, more increased mixed land-use reduces commuting distance. Therefore, reduced commuting distance make traffic volume increase.
