The National Institute of the Korean Language has started a research project to select the vocabulary for use in the various stages of Korean language education after having selected the vocabulary for Korean educational purposes. This project will examine the frequency of the vocabulary used in large-sized balanced documentary records, analyze the words used in textbooks and compare them with the words actually used by elementary school students to form a basic material and present vocabulary applicable to educational stage by receiving the advice of experts in the field of education. The contents of this paper represent the vocabulary used in elementary school textbooks, which will be used as the study sample for selecting the vocabulary applicable to educational stage.
All of the 7<SUP>th</SUP> curriculum elementary school textbooks were analyzed to determine the use of vocabulary in elementary school textbooks. A total of 127 volumes, 18 types of textbooks in 13 subjects, were analyzed based on the homonym found in the 'Standard Korean Dictionary'. The format used to write theanalyzed data followed the corpus format, which was used to analyze the '21st century Sejong Project' organized by the National Institute of the Korean Language. The analysis found that about 24,000 words were being used in the elementary school textbooks. Excluding the verb and the particle, the word that was used the most was the auxiliary '보다[boda]'. The reason why theauxiliary '보다[boda]' appeared more than the word '것[geot]' and '하다[hada]', which are generally identified as the most commonly occurring words in vocabulary research, is because the analysis was carried out using textbooks. Expressions like 'try to' was used the most, because there were many expressions that suggested learning activities. Through this research, the pattern of vocabulary used for different subjects according to educational level of the grade can be seen. And it will be processed and used for selecting basic words for Korean education.
