Interdisciplinary approaches, which encourage a certain field of study to cross its traditional boundaries by connecting and integrating other fields of study, are increasingly demanded by our pluralistic and information-oriented society. This urgent need of interdisciplinary researches enables one to critically reflect and analyze the Christian tradition and human experiences together. With this in mind, this study will investigate the possibilities of a child's psychological education and spiritual formation particularly from the psychoanalytic perspective of Francoise Dolto who was a child psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and early childhood educator. Also, while regarding attempts to reconstruct Christian education and formation, this study will be deeply engaged in a dialogue between psychology, especially psychoanalysis and Christian education and formation. This is crucial to this study in a sense that it helps one to observe how a child understands, which will benefit a child's psychological education and spiritual formation.
In the first section of the study, the author discusses the need for understanding a child's psychology and spirituality. In the second section, the author explores how Anna Freud, representing the Vienna school of child psychoanalysis and Melanie Klein, leading the London school view the understanding of childhood. The third section focuses on the life of Francoise Dolto, and her encounter with psychoanalysis and her teacher. In the fourth section, the author scrutinizes Dolto's psychological and spiritual understanding of children. The fifth section not only looks at how one can care and educate a child, but also proposes the importance of family and a divine-human synergistic program. The purpose of this divine-human synergistic program, according to the author, is to enable us as early childhood educators not only to realize that God works in children and us for inner changes, but also to acknowledge that we are responsible to strive to imitate Jesus Christ. In other words, both God and we are working together in order to help a child grow healthily in a psychological and spiritual manner. The author in the final section comments on a child's psychological education and spiritual formation in overall, and suggests how this topic can be furthered by future studies.
