Recently, based on the New Economic Geography, a few researches suggested that the major determinants of country export performance would be foreign market access and internal supply capacities.
In this study, according to those previous researches, I have drawn the theoretical model which explains the variation of regional export performance in Korea by foreign market accessibility and export supply capacity, and I have run the regressions using the proxy variables of market access and supply capacity.
But unlike previous studies analysing the export of a country, I have focused on the regional export in Korea, so I have devised "export market accessibility", which is the modified concept of previous foreign market access and reflects the geographical characteristics of Koreatsmall territory and export through the ports).
The empirical result said that the bigger market size, the higher labor productivity, the shorter physical distance to export portts) and the higher export market accessibility of the region, the higher export performance. I think this result has two main implications. First, from the theoretical view, the logic of New Economic Geography can be applied to the vel)' small regions like cities or provinces in Korea. Second, related with regional policy, the improvement of accessibility to main export ports can have positive effect on the regional export growth.
