This monograph is the study on the experience of Abe Kobo in Manchuria and is the part of the upper subject "Contemporary Japanese Literature and the Colonial Experience".
When Abe Kobo was two years old in 1925, his father had gone to Bongchun (now Shenyang) and became the professor in Manchuria College of Medicine. He had grown up there until he entered the College of Medicine, Tokyo University. In 1944, as soon as he heard the Japanese defeat of the World War Ⅱ, he returned his home town Manchuria Then Abe Kobo faced the collapse of the Manchurian Empire with the defeat of Japan. Manchuria which had been his original-seat disappeared in the world. Besides he realized cleary that his own country Japan was the assassin. Since then he questioned to himself about what a human-being is rather than what the fatherland means to me or how I revert my mother's country. And he gave up the way of being a doctor followed his father and became the writer.
He completed two novel based directly on the reality of the Manchurian experience in a maiden work "Owarisi-michi-no-sirubeni" and "Kemonotachi-wa kokyou-wo mezasu". Primarily I examined these two novel and then studied his experiences in Manchuria indirectly.
Describing his own Manchurian experience in these novel, he excluded the romantic color. As most Japanese contemporary writer's Manchurian experience was full of nostalgia recall, their works trended toward a kind of nostalgia literature. But neither Abe Kobo excluded the romantic color thoroughly nor he permitted that heroes returned to Japan. He did not sell the lyrical Japan and could become the world-wide writer with the universality.
