Although the close affinity Joyce has with France and French literature is generally acknowledged, the precise link of his representative work Ulysses to French novels still needs to be spelled out with greater specificity. This link we locate in Edouard Dujardin’s Les Lauriers sont coupes, which, to judge from various biographical records and accounts, Joyce read and studied with hearty relish. Yet Joyce’s attachment to Dujardin is not mere personal whim. Quite apart from the question of ranking Dujardin as a precursor of French experimental novels, the stylistic similarity between his work and Ulysses, to which the shorthand term of “interior monologue” does only partial justice, has a significance in its own right. Above all, it shows the traditional geopolitical strategy of Irish Catholic resistance to Anglo-Irish ascendancy, namely the old political and cultural alliance with France, since from his first novels on, Joyce consciously adopts a “French” style and mode, rather than following the dominant British novelistic culture and its conventions. Yet Joyce in his famous self-imposed “exile” rejects the “semi-colonial” Irish Catholic identity as well as the English and Anglo-Irish literary hegemony, in which consists his unique “internationality.” This we understand quite literally as a hyphenated stance between nations, as the last signature of Ulysses “Trieste-Zurich-Paris” most graphically asserts.
