'Justice' and 'Grace', basic themes of Durrenmatt's works, are the main theme of Christianity. Especially 'Grace' is Paul's new message in the New Testament. By comparing Durrenmatt's Der Besuch der alten Dame with Paul's thoughts in ' the Epistle to the Romans', this paper tried to look into the Protestant characteristics of Durrenmatt.
In 'the Epistle to the Romans', beginning with a general view of the spiritual status faced by human beings, Paul ascertains the fact that human beings are all sinners and need salvation.
Also in Der Besuch der alten Dame, people in Gullen are proved to be sinners. Then why does everyone nevertheless assert his own justice, saying he is right?
In chapter 1 of the thesis, the concept of justice of Socrates, Platon, Aristotels and the Hebrews of the Old Testament and New Testament were compared.
In chapter 2, similarities between Durrenmatt's work, especially Ill's perception of justice, and Paul's thoughts in 'the Epistle to the Romans' were looked into. In short, human beings distort justice due to selfish instinct, they justify their behavior, criticize others' misdeeds, and lose sight of their position as a creature of God. So human beings are easily subject to crime and temptation, which lead finally to an end, death--for what Ill is the good example.
Before death, Ill resisted and was taken by panic and anxiety. He tried everything to avoid death but was frustrated and experienced the anguisth of heart. In the middle of his agonies, isolated from others, he engaged in deep introspection. Then he acknowledged his sin and came to the justice of God. He became humble as a creature.
Ill's final spiritual awakening is the reflection of Paul's message, namely 'Salvation' comes only through God's grace.
In conclusion, Der Besuch der alten Dame is a morality play that calls people's attention to the reflection of human nature and helps to find the perception of 'Salvation'.
