This study was conducted to investigate the effect of NI (night interruption) with various LEDs as a light source on flowering and energy saving. ‘Sierra Scarlet’ cyclamens was grown under NI (4 h, 2200-0200) by red, far-red, blue, and red+blue LED, and three-waves fluorescent lamp in a greenhouse. During experiments, the average night temperature was maintained at over 16oC. Photoperiods were manipulated by automatic curtain (9/15 h, day/night) in a greenhouse study. The NI was provided by each lamp with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 4±1 μ㏖?m-2?s-1. Night temperature was manipulated by data logger and oil heater. Electricity cost was estimated from the capacity of each bulb. The NI with all light sources hastened flower initiation and flowering compared to untreated short-day (SD) condition. The NI with blue+red LED promoted flowering most effectively among all LED light sources in this study. The petiole length became longer when plants suffered the NI treatment with far-red LED, indicating that NI with far-red LED deteriorates the plant quality compared to other light sources. From the above results, the NI with red+blue LED was recommended for NI lighting to promote the growth and flowering of cyclamen in order to save heating and electricity cost during winter cultivation. About 10,200-10,800 ㎾ of electrical power can be saved in 4 months if 4 h NI using LEDs for cyclamen cultivation is used.
