This paper examines the dynamic causal relationship between delinquent peer associations and delinquent behaviors using Youth panel data with three waves.
Delinquent peer association is known as a factor which has the strongest relationship with delinquent behavior. However, causal relationship between delinquent behavior and delinquent peer association have been controversial for a long time in criminology. There are three kinds of explanations about the relationship. Firstly, lots of researchers think that delinquent peer association is causally related to delinquent behaviors. Youths are more likely to commit delinquent behavior if they are associated with delinquent friends. Differential association theory, learning theory and group process theory share this approach. Secondly, some researchers provide opposite causal explanation. Control and propensity theories argue that delinquent peers do not cause delinquent behavior. Instead, the correlation between delinquent peers and delinquent behavior is said to be spurious, due to social selection(reverse causality), individual heterogeneity(attributes of individuals that select for both peers and behavior). Thirdly, interactional theory combine the causality hypothesis with the social selection hypothesis. Interactional theory explicitly emphasizes reciprocal effects between delinquent peers and delinquent behaviors. According to this theory, delinquent peer associations predict future delinquency, and delinquency increases the likelihood of association with delinquent peers.
For this analysis three year youth panel data produced by Korea Institute for Youth Development was used. LISREL method was used for the analysis of causal relationship between delinquent peers and delinquent behavior.
The major findings are as follows:
1) In status offense, such as smoking, drinking, truancy, and runaway, delinquent peer associations do not cause status offenses, but status offenses are likely to increase the level of delinquent peer association next year. This result shows that social selection hypothesis is valid for status offense.
2) But in criminal offense, such as assault, robbery, theft, and etc, opposite causal relationship was founded. Delinquent peer association has a significant effect to criminal offenses next year, but criminal offenses do not have a significant effect or weak effect to delinquent peer association. This result means that causation hypothesis is valid for criminal offense.
As seen above, different kinds of causal relationship were found in status offense and criminal offense. This results show all hypothesis are partially supported in this analysis, and suggest that more precious analysis should be conducted to explore the causal relationship between delinquent peer and delinquent behaviors in Korea.
