In spite of the increases in legalized gambling behaviors, we can not find any empirical studies on them in South Korea. The purposes of this article are to find out why and what kinds of persons take part in casino gambling of Kangwonland. Another concerns of this study are about the levels of addictions and the various patterns of gambling behaviors. Before the empirical analysis, definitions of gambling and casino gambling and the sociological and psychological theories of gambling is reviewed for the research interest.
831 respondents to self-administered questions are sampled in ticketing hall for the entrance to Kangwonland Casino during the three days from January 30, 2004. Measured variables are socio-demographic variables(age, sex, and socio-economic status variavles), levels of addiction(SOGS), monetary and non-monetary motives of gambling behaviors and various patterns of gambling behaviors.
Results of this empirical analysis show the several important facts. First, there is no relationship between impacts of socio-demographic variables and other factors. If any, they are very weak except for sex and the directions of impacts are not consistent. By the results of this survey, anomie theory and alienation theory, which have insisted that lower class has higher level of gambling participation than middle or upper class. Second, The levels of addiction of gamblers measured by SOGS(the South Oaks Gambling Screen) is very serious. Only 23.7% of samples have no problems of gambling dependence. 28.5% of samples has some problem, and 47.8% of samples are pathological gamblers. This high level of gambling addiction are not found anywhere except in Korea, and gambling addictions is the most important predictor for the patterns of gambling behavior. Third, most of visitors are gambling for the monetary motives, not for the non-monetary motives. Therefore, theories that suggest other motives of gambling except monetary factor must be rejected or modified in case of casino gambling. Finally, this study suggest the necessity of policies that can prevent gambling addiction of visitors.
