The purpose of this article is to investigate some consonantal changes in English phrases in the framework of Optimality Theory. I will discuss the consonantal changes between words, crossing a word boundary. In flapping and assimilation, particularly, adjacent words eliciting the transition between sounds cause phonetic changes of segments, which are restricted in fast speech rather than careful speech. For phonological analysis of this consonantal changes, I argue the necessity of Optimality- Theoretic constraints such as Identity, Agreement, and Alignment. Identity and Agreement constraints have an effect on the analysis of assimilation, while an alignment constraint which prescribes the marginal coincidence between a prosodic word and a syllable contributes to clarifying ambisyllabicity of flapping.
