The demands for the dredging work have been increasing due to social and industrial reasons such as the river channel improvement. The data have shown that the contamination level of river sediments in Korea often exceeds SQGs (Sediments Quality Guidelines), and thus an appropriate technique to treat contaminated sediments after dredging is necessary. The most of currently available remediation methods rely on dumping and landfill disposal after treatment. However, The suggested systematic approach in this presentation aims to provide effective and economic solutions for contaminated sediments by integrating remediation techniques and increasing recycling of remediated sediments. The system consists of both washing and stabilization processes with continuous multi particle separation. In the early stage, the sediments are separated into two particle sizes. The coarse-grained sediment over 0.075㎜, generally decontaminated with less trouble, follows normal washing steps and is sent for recycling. The fine-grained sediments are treated in two ways depending on the contamination level. The relatively less contaminated sediments are stabilized by mixing an appropriate stabilizing agent (adsorbent) for potential recycling. A series of tests, sorption isotherm, sequential extraction, and TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure), show that birnessite and apatite are most effective stablizing agents among tested for Cd and Pb. The highly contaminated sediments are separated again at 0.02-0.04㎜. The particles bigger than this second separation point is treated by advanced washing process to the recyclable level. The most fine residues, down-sized by continuous particle separation, are finally sent for disposal. The research is still ongoing to determine optimal separation sizes. The suggested strategic approach to remediate contaminated sediments can help promote remediation efficiency and recycling of dredged sediments, leading to an effective and economic management for dredged materials.
