Objectives : As the known neurocognitive impairments in anorexia nervosa(AN) are also reported to be found in other psychiatric disorders, it has been difficult to understand the pathognomonic neurocognitive features of AN. This study aims to find the distinguishing neurocognitive impairments of AN compared with other neurotic disorders.
Methods : Based on our former study, a neuropsychological battery of tests composed of the trail making test (TMT) part A and part B, the visual span test(VST), and the finger tapping test(FTT) were administered to 32 women with AN and 13 patients with neurotic disorders or depressive disorders of comparable age, intelligence and education.
Results : The AN group showed poor performance on the TMT part A and part B compared to the control group. There were no significant differences in the performance level of the VST reflecting the ability of visual/working memory and the FTT reflecting the ability of motor skills between groups.
Conclusion : Our results suggest that dysfunction in attention and set-shifting ability may be the distinguishing features of AN compared with neurotic disorders or depressive disorders. The deficit in set-shifting ability is suggested to be proper in AN, which could apply to a customized treatment for AN. The results of the study are informative but require confirmation in a larger control group with specific diagnostic entities.
