The purpose of this study is to investigate the discipleship reflected in the Gospel of John and to examine the possibility of applying it to the Christian education today. Exegetical analysis of the text leads us to assume that there are three ecclesiological features in the Gospel of John: 'vertical discipleship' which illustrates the relationship between God and Christians; 'intracommunal discipleship' concerned with the Johannine commandment of brotherly love; and extracommunal discipleship which stresses the responsibility of mission.
These models in the Johannine discipleship clearly offer suggestive and meaningful clues as to how the Christian education is to be carried out in the biblical sense. First, the Johannine identity as 'children of God' - either by means of one's own decision or through God's gracious choice - leads us to a 'creative tension', which places emphasis upon both our responsibility of mission and reinforced identity. Second, the Johannine commandment of love provides us with a perfect model of intra communal relationship between fellow Christians. Jesus called us to love each other, inasmuch as he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death. Third, the Johannine Christians, though they were exposed to severe persecutions, tried to fulfill their mission of preaching the Gospel. The church has no reason for existence, if it ceases to do missionary works.
To sum up, the Gospel of John shows indisputably ecclesial discipleship, which has been neglected in the New Testament scholarship, could and should be applied to church education.
