The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristics of groundwater contaminated with TCE and the plume apportionment by clustering. The study area is an industrial complex in Gangwon-do. To evaluate the chemical composition of the groundwater in the study area (57 monitoring wells), two rounds of water samplings were performed (April and August, 2004). Most of the groundwaters are classified into two groups including Ca-HCO₃ and Ca-Cl types. The Ca-Cl type indicates the influence of industrial wastewater and deicers (CaCl₂) in the industrial complex. Cluster analysis was performed using the TCE, DCE, VC and CT concentrations. The cluster analysis showed the resulting 3 groups for April (Group ⅠAPR~ⅢAPR) and August (Group ⅠAGU~ⅢAGU). Groups ⅠAPR and ⅠAGU showed high TCE and CT and similar the distribution of TCE and CT. Groups ⅡAPR and ⅠAGU showed very low contaminant concentrations. Groups ⅢAPR and ⅢAGU showed high TCE and DCE levels together with detectable level of VC. DCE and VC, which indicates biodegradation of TCE.
