This study aimed to have a concrete understanding on Jo Hyang’ language theory through analysis of his poetic theory. Generally, it was regarded that it was related with surrealism which he was oriented to, which his poetry was also influenced by. But in this study, I intended to clarify what influences he was had by, what intent he concreted in his language theory.
His language theory had been contemplated and placed under his substantial efforts to internalize the modernism literature, literature history, and Korean oral tradition that he had read and experienced. In addition, he intended to establish his own view on language and experiment it in his poetry.
He presented the view of modernism language, because he recognised a discordance between language and objects. He thought that the gap of the conventional stereotypical language and reality could be overcome by esthetic processing and reform of language. He was concerned new words represented modern culture in 1950’s through the combination of word and word. He also introduced the language theory of surrealism in which he found the influence of unconsciousness and metaphor. The pure language that he explained showed possibility in which only the texture of the language survived through death of meaning, in which the signification of language was permanently deferred and recreated.
