??This paper aims to examine closely the ecological thought of Calvin, through his enormous writings, per example, Institution, Commentary and Predication etc.
??Even though, Calvin's ecological thought has limitations, yet some of the following reasons tell us that it is valuable in many ways today.
??First, Calvin's thought insists that Men are essentially equal with the others creatures because all were created from the same origin, which is earth. Men and Nature are not separated. They do not have any conflict. Men cultivate land not for the purpose of the income or goods, but of the pleasure of the activity it -self, So men's relation with the creatures is of being it-self not of having.
??Second, Calvin's thought don't receive literally the text of Gn 1;28 'conquer the earth ... rule over all of the creature ... '. The thought interprets it in the very convivial and favorable perspective. He adopts the 'nurture' instead of 'conquest' or 'government' etc., in order to emphasize the thoughtful and careful relation between Men and other creatures. In that manner, he reminds Men's responsibility to nature.
??Third, likewise, Men's right of using nature is interpreted in the same manner. Though Calvin's thought accepts that Men have the right to use the goods of nature or the nature it-self, the right is neither unlimited nor unconditioned. His thought always calls for restrain and limit, and underlines the frugal usage of the goods, this is because nature is offered only for the survival and life to men.
??Fourth and last, Calvin's thoughtmaintains that the troublemaker is not nature but man. The created world is destructed by Men due to sin and corruption. In relation to the nature, Calvin's thought regards the avarice as cause of sin. Therefore it is man who have to bring essential changes. According to his thought, men have to improve the love relationship between themselves and nature, by riding themselves out of avarice and greed.
??In general, there is a tendency that the responsibility of destruction of nature is shifted on the occidental civilization and the christianism. At least in the thought of Calvin, we can not find any relation between the contemporary ecological problem and the christianism. If there is certain relation, that is of the opposite manner against the destructive civilization, in the supposition that the christianism is faithful to his teaching.
