This paper presents issues and necessary conditions for the rate control optimization, channel assignment and/or scheduling problem, and routing problem in wireless mesh networks with multiple radio and multiple channels. Specifically, we are able to formulate a network utility maximization problem for end-to-end session rates subject to link-channel, node-radio and interference constraints. The allocations of channels to interfaces/radios as well as the choice of metric for route formation greatly influence the end-to-end throughput of the network. Thereby, this paper provides motivation, approach, and optimization problems for throughput maximization which leads to a cross layer design.
