The purpose of this article is to trace the Pyongyang revival movement in 1907 which was called the 'Korean Pentecost'by Rev. Blair and to seek the revival way of the Korean church which today is experiencing a revival again.
The Korean Church has been celebrating the 'Revival Movement of 1907' for several years. There were a handful of symposiums, seminars and lectures by local churches, seminaries and academic societies. One of the aims of these meetings was to anticipate the revival movement again in the Korean Church.
The revival movement of Pyongyang in 1907 began on January 2nd and lasted through the 22nd at Pyongyang Central Presbyterian Church, specifically when Rev. Blair read "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is part of it," (ICor.12:27) and preached "Discord and Unity" on the evening of Jan. 12th. There was a similar phenomenon on the Pentecost in early Christianity. Attendants of the meeting confessed their own sins publicly to one another without any hesitation even though it was about private matters. This kind of gathering spread all over Korea. After then, the Korean Church began to grow rapidly.
The background of the revival movement of 1907 was a Bible study which was held annually. They wanted to know about Christianity and God. It was the end of the Joseon dynasty. The Korean people needed to rely on something. They opened their spiritual eyes. One of the direct momentums of this movement began from Dr. Hardie's retrospect and repentance of his own fruitless mission work compared to that of fellow missionaries. There were also foreign influences likewise Azusa Street and Wales revival movements.
In order to bring revival again to the Korean Church, there should be repentance of sins and awakening spirituality and cooperation of the Church and theology, as well as theologically backing up the Church and revival movement.
