Facial expression is the most important to communicate the emotions among many non-verbal communication means. Animation characters have shown their inherent personality and emotions mainly through the facial motions. The authors have found that 43 expressions are good enough for showing various emotions. This experiment was carried out two steps. Firstly, four distinct personal characters whose facial expressions are covering the most of animation facial expressions are selected. The personalities of the four characters are studied. Secondly, the facial expressions of the characters are extracted from animation movies. And we could find the distinct 43 expressions by using a generic model character. It is found that, if we have 25 eye and 18 lip expressions, all facial expressions can be covered. This result suggests us in building minimal data set for the database of auto character facial expression.
