This essay aims at proving that Paul Rudnick’s I Hate Hamlet (1991) reaches the comic resolution with the pivotal role of John Barrymore’s ghost. The existing criticism on the play is divided into three: repression (David Kelly), culture clash (Laura Carter, David Remy), and its text as a cultural product (Maria Scott). However, it either takes note of only the part of or ignores the influences of the ghost on all the other characters. This essay will focus on discussing the character of the ghost and his pivotal role in the play.
Barrymore’s ghost reveals comic aspect as well as serious one. The comic effect is produced when he suddenly changes from seriousness to comicality, and vice versa. For this reason, his character meets the necessary condition for reaching the comic resolution of the play. By the way, the ghost teaches Andrew Rally how to act Hamlet successfully and makes his wish to be a great actor fulfilled. Though his performance at the outdoor theatre in the Central Park proves unsuccessful, he tastes glory during the moment when he delivers the part of the Hamlet’s soliloquy starting with “To be or not to be.” The ghost also makes Deirdre ready to have a sexual relationship with Andrew after her value on a hero is changed and her self-esteem is recovered by the ghost. In addition, the ghost makes Lillian’s wish to encounter him realized. Felicia Dantine approaches nearer her dream to be a real estate agent at Beverly Hills after she become’s Gary’s lover. Their close relationship is established by Andrew’s Hamlet performance which is possible with the ghost's advance instruction. Gary’s dream to make much money comes to naught when Andrew refuses his offer to star in the new TV series titled Night School but, as a corresponding reward, he meets his soul mate, Felicia who finally denies her former belief in the spirit, the other world, and the spiritual telecommunication.
In conclusion, the ghost who reveals comicality as well as seriousness has a pivotal role to make I Hate Hamlet a witty and humorous comedy with the convincing comic resolution.
