The purpose of this study is to explore the basic levels of Korean lexical categories and to investigate their semantic properties. Findings in this study, based on previous studies, cognitive linguistic research, and the researcher’s own exploration of the basic levels of Korean lexical categories, are as follows: Firstly, items and concepts are universally perceived and conceptualized at basic levels, in accord with the principle of cognitive economy, providing the greatest information with the least effort and demonstrating the prototype effect in terms of perception, action, communication and knowledge. Secondly, basic level terms from the 16 Korean lexical categories have been extracted as a result of investigation of word form structures and frequency of use. Finally, four main semantic properties of the basic levels of Korean lexical categories have been identified: (ⅰ) There is a preponderance of single words and heads, along with relatively high frequency in terms of word form structure. (ⅱ) Experiments in naming and visual imaging show that basic levels tend to be transferred to subordinate levels in the former, while categories tend to be transferred to superordinate levels in the latter. Such responses are competitive in regard to natural object categories, rather than artificial ones. (ⅲ) Items and concepts are universally construed in the neutral context at the basic level, being basic, economic and familiar. (ⅳ) The cognitive linguistic approach to language is significant for its open perspective, admitting the superiority of basic levels and culture dependency.
