As a part of historical work tracing the origin of the peculiar socio-political conservatism of Daegu-Gyeongbuk area, this study aims to discuss about the forming process of pro-Americanism and anti-communism of this area. Especially, this study pays attention to the elective affinity between the US military government and the religious leaders of local Protestant churches shown in the period of US military government between 1945 and 1948, and more particularly before and after the Daegu October People's Strife of October, 1946.
As a result, the local Protestant religious leaders most of whom were revealed to have engaged actively or passively in pro-Japanese activities could take advantage of the ideology of anti-communism supported by US military government sometimes in order to cancel out their past pro-Japanese activities, and on the other hand for the sake of enhancing their hitherto socio-political positions and status. In this way, they had contributed to the formation of the socio-political conservatism of Daegu-Gyeongbuk area. Especially, in the midst of the political conflict between the left and right wings right after the liberation of 1945, and in the people's strife of 1946, except a few Christian socialists, most Christian leaders aligned themselves with the US military government, and actively participated in the military regime as advisers, counselors, interpreters, and officers. Meanwhile, the left wing, and Christian socialists who had led the October strife, in spite of their active protest against the policy failures of US military government, lost their power and left only notorious names in the history of Christianity.
In this way, local Christian leaders who had engaged in pro-Japanese activities and now stood in the line of pro-Americanism could establish anti-communism as their new ideology and, backed by the US military government, could strengthen themselves as the leading strata of this area. In this way, the socio-political conservatism of this area had been formed and developed.
