This study reviews the tendency of shamanism studies in Malaysia, with special reference to the characteristics and meanings of shamanism in Malaysia, focused on Malaysia peninsula and Borneo region. For this study, I examine the. features and implications of shamanism studies in Malaysia to understand and grasp the characteristics and meanings of Malaysian shamanism, especially shamanism of the Malays, Orang Asli(known as indigenous ethnic groups in Malaysia peninsula), and indigenous natives in Borneo.
My aim of this study is to review and understand the tendency of Malaysian shamanism studies, with special focus on shamanism in Malays and Orang Asli and indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak(which is located in the northwestern area of Borneo island). For the aim of this study, I confined the scope of this study to examine and analyse the characteristics and meanings of shamanism in Malaysia to review the tendency or trend in Malaysian shamanism studies.
Through the outcomes of this study, I hope this study will contribute to the more in-depth understanding of the features and meanings of Malaysian shamanism and to the better grasping of the tendency of shamanism studies in Malaysia, Malay world including Indonesia, and furthermore in Southeast Asia, and Asia as a whole. I hope this study will be a basic material or datum to perform the comparative studies for any Asian shamanism studies including shamanism studies in Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia, and shamanism studies in the global dimension.
